How to skin a mouse
There's more than one way
Using keyboard navigation techniques

Tip #: 4.1.77
Ver(s): PTWin32, V2, V1

Navigation through the windows, notebook pages, and fields of PTWin32 is carried out primarily by pointing and clicking your mouse. But did you know there are other ways to trigger commands and move about the program? In fact it’s possible to use most of PTWin32 without ever touching your mouse.

If you examine PTWin32’s Main Menu or many of its buttons you will discover that menu items and button labels contains a single underlined letter. For example, the first item on the Main Menu reads as; “File”. Holding down the [Alt] key and pressing the letter “F” will cause the File Menu to appear. From there you can use the [Down Arrow] key to highlight a menu item and press [Enter] to execute the selected item.

You can also select the menu items by using their underlined letter. For example, Press and hold [Alt], then press “A” this will display the Activity Menu. Without releasing [Alt] you can then press “P” to display the Parcel Window.

Once the Parcel Window loads you will notice that the Main Menu contains additional selections that allow you to use the [Alt]/underlined-letter key combination to execute the commands found on the Window Toolbar.

The [Tab] key is used to rotate your cursor through the fields and notebook pages of PTWin32. Each time you press [Tab] your cursor will move to the next field on the page. When you get to the last field pressing [Tab] will select the tabbed notebook page by surrounding the page name with a dotted rectangle. When you see this rectangle you can use the [Left Arrow] and [Right Arrow] keys to move among the notebook pages. Pressing [Shift] and [Tab] will rotate your focus in the opposite direction.

If you are on a Combo-Box or Pulldown field you can use [Alt] and the [Up Arrow] and [Down Arrow] keys to display the choices and select an item. Pressing [Enter] will place the selected item in the field.

In the case of button labels the [Alt]/underlined–letter key combination also applies. However, one button is usually set as “default” and can be executed merely by pressing [Enter]. The “default” button can be distinguished by its darker, thicker border.

There are more keyboard combinations than space in this article. For example, [Ctrl] - [F4] will close the current window, and [Alt] - [F4] exits PTWin32. Many of these combinations apply to all Windows programs. More information can be found in your Windows documentation.

If you still want to use the mouse, that’s okay. Here’s a tip for you. When you push a button in PTWin32 it’s not the push of your finger on the mouse button that triggers the command, it’s the release. That means you can abort a button click by moving your cursor from the clicked button before releasing your finger on the mouse. It’s like playing chess; the move isn’t official until you take your hand off the piece.
