Editing fields of unlimited length
Navigating PTWin32's many Memo fields

Tip #: 4.2.84
Ver(s): PTWin32, V2, V1

There are a number of different field types throughout PTWin32 that help in classifying and facilitating your various data formats.

There are fields that hold dates, dollar amounts, numbers, and lists of possible choices for values among others.

One of the most common field types available on PTWin32 windows is a Memo field. While other fields limit the number of characters you can type into them Memo fields do not restrict the length of your value.

Memo fields get as long as you need them to even if you want the field to hold 50+ pages of text.

On PTWin32 windows Memo fields show as much text as can fit in the display area of the field. You can use the 4 arrow keys along with the Home and End keys to display that portion of the value that can be shown in the display area.

However, to the right of each Memo field on a PTWin32 window you will find a button with an icon that looks like a stack of papers. Pushing this button will display the Memo Edit Dialog Box.

The Memo Edit Dialog Box provides you with a place dedicated to working with Memo field values. You can Maximize the dialog box to have full screen access to long values

Once you have displayed a long value in a Memo Edit Dialog Box you can move through the value using your arrow keys, the Home and End keys, and the Page Up and Page Down keys.

Holding down the Control key and simultaneously pressing the End key will bring you to the last character in the value. A Control / Home combination brings you to the first character in the value. Using Control / Right Arrow and Left Arrow moves through the value one word at a time, and you can Select, Overwrite, or Insert any changes you would like to make.

Additionally, you can Copy and Paste from any other Windows text editing software Like MS Word or Word Perfect.

Most word processors include some formatting codes in the text you Copy that tells the Memo field where paragraphs, indentations, etc are located in the value. However, there are some codes and or characters that cannot be translated into the Memo field’s ASCII character set. For example, bullet characters might be converted to asterisks, as the bullet image in your word processor is not a character per se.

Making proper use of Memo fields allows you to easily manipulate long values like comments, legal descriptions, or the text of violated regulations.
