Capturing your screen as an image you can email

Tip #: 5.1.107
Ver(s):PTWin32, V2, V1

You’re just minding your own business, using the computer, when all of a sudden a box pops up that contains an error message you don’t understand.

You know the message refers to the complicated array of programs and drivers that somehow work together to make your computer and/or network function, but you don’t know which one of the players the error refers to.

Having no way to judge you call the only authoritative and responsive technical support people you know for advice. We take your call and either fix the problem or tell you who to pester.

Usually these error messages are short and can be written down or read to us, but sometimes the error is involved and refers to other items on the screen. If this is your situation then you might want to show us exactly what you’re looking at.

You can do this by capturing a snap shot of your screen. You can save the snap shot as a file which you can then attach to an email.

Sending us a picture of a complex situation can save you a lot of time when it comes to explaining your particular problem to technical support staff.

Capturing a picture of your screen is a pretty easy process in Windows. Just press and hold the [Ctrl] key, then press the [Print Screen] key. This puts a picture of your screen into Windows clipboard.

The [Print Screen] key is usually with the [Scroll Lock] and [Pause] keys somewhere in the upper right portion of your keyboard.

Once you have pressed [Ctrl] and [Print Screen] execute Windows Paint program which can usually be found in the Accessories menu located in your Windows Programs menu. Once Paint is loaded select Paste from the Edit menu to create an image of your screen.

You may be told the clipboard image is a different size from the current settings in Paint. Answer Yes to reset the bitmap size to match your captured screen and display it in Paint.

Next select Save from the File menu. As you enter a location and file name select JPEG as the file type. This will make the image smaller and easier to email.

It’s as simple as that. Once you have saved the image you can Attach it to any email you send or print it out and fax it in to help explain the circumstances of your error
