Hidden Help
A secret for system administrators
The location and nature of the pdoxdev.hlp file.

Tip #: 6.1.153
Ver(s):PTWin32, V2

Well it’s not really a secret, and it’s not really hidden, but it is off the beaten path. Hey, you try to make up a few hundred of these headlines and see how far you get.

There are lots of Help files that come with PTWin32. Most of them are accessible from the PTWin32 Program Group in Windows, or from within other PTWin32 applications. But there is one Help file that does not have a Windows shortcut associated with it.

If you go into Windows Explorer or My Computer and set yourself to the \PTWin32\Paradox directory you will find a file called pdoxdev.hlp. This Windows Help file contains a lot of useful information about the installation of Paradox Runtime that comes with PTWin32.

Double clicking on the file name will open the Help file and show you the familiar Contents, Index, and Find tabs associated with Windows Help files.

This pdoxdev.hlp file can come in pretty handy for system administrators troubleshooting a Paradox Runtime or BDE problem. It contains fundamentals about Paradox Runtime and lots of configuration information including necessary BDE files, pathing requirements, Interoperability with other products, technical tips, SQL data, and lots of other topics that deal with the nuts and bolts of Paradox Runtime.

We don’t create a shortcut to this Help file because we don’t want it to confuse everyday users, but it can be just what a system administrator needs to get to the bottom of a problem
