If you run PTWin on a Windows NT server
and your workstations are running Windows 95 or Windows 3.x you may receive persistent
index file errors as a result of the NT feature known as Opportunistic Locking. To disable
Opportunistic Locking you must understand how to change the Registry on a Windows NT
server. If you are unfamiliar with Windows Registry do not attempt this reconfiguration.
Run REGEDT32.EXE on the server and add or change a value in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters. The new
value is called EnableOplocks. It is of type REG_DWORD, and the initial value should be
set to 0 (any radix). If there is already an EnableOplocks value present, be sure it is
set to 0. Do not add a new value.
If you have a Windows 95 installation and experience persistent index file errors you may
be able to solve the problem by disabling new file sharing, locking semantics, and/or
write-behind caching in Windows 95. To do this, execute Windows Control Panel and select
System. Click on the Performance tab and press the File System button.
When the File System Properties dialog box appears click on the Troubleshooting tab. The
Troubleshooting tab displays a column of check boxes. Click in the check boxes for
[Disable new file sharing and locking semantics] and/or [Disable write-behind caching for
all drives].
