Pushing the Post Button

Pushing the Post Button
What the heck does that button do anyway?

How saving to a network database works

Tip #: 1.2.10
Ver(s):V2, V1

When you ask PTWin to access your records it makes copies of sections of your database tables and loads them into the memory of your computer. Any changes you make are carried out upon these copies of records. The copies are not integrated into your database tables until they are Posted.

When you want to accept changes to a record and commit the data into the table you push the Post button. There are two reasons why you should develop a habit of pushing the Post button regularly.

1) Posting your records saves them to the relative safety of your disk drive. If your computer’s motherboard suddenly loses power any un-posted changes to data table records will not be in the tables when power is restored. Records stored in memory are volatile and only exist temporally.

2) If you are on a network and have changed information in a record, pushing the Post button will make that information available to other users as quickly as possible. Remember that they pull their information from the database table not the memory on your computer. If you haven’t posted it, they can’t get at it.

So get in the habit of pushing that Post button on your PTWin window toolbars and keep your records as up to date as possible.
