Using Shazam to write queries
How to get quick answers to ad hoc questions

Tip #: 3.2.51
Ver(s): PTWin32, V2, V1

Many of our clients use the Shazam Ad Hoc Report Wizard included with PTWin32 to create all kinds of printed reports, but that’s not its only use.

“Ad Hoc” is a Latin phrase meaning, “for this (purpose)” and it refers to a temporary toolset used to answer a particular question.

Thinking about the Report Wizard as a place to create custom printed output is different from thinking of it as a place to quickly get an answer to a specific question on the fly.

The effort that goes into laying out a report is considerable. If you remove that effort and think of Shazam as a place to set up a fast query that provides quick results you will find it is a powerful tool for getting answers.

You need only the Define Search and Preview Report tabs of the Report Wizard window to query your PTWin32 data. If you don’t define a custom layout Shazam will arrange your data in a tabular format of columns and rows and show it on the Preview Report tab.

All you need to do is select tables, fields, and filters on the Define Search tab then go to Preview Report to see your results. You can go back and forth between the tabs to change your query as often as you like.

If you can think up a question about your data chances are PTWin32’s Ad Hoc Report Wizard can provide you with a rapid tabular answer. It is a gateway to increased control over your information and it increases the value of using PTWin32 significantly.
