Kindness to a fault
The dangers of sharing

User file sharing can cause damage

Tip #: 3.3.58
Ver(s):PTWin32, V2, V1

With so many users all across the country it would not be uncommon for you to meet someone from a nearby jurisdiction who is also a PTWin32 user. We encourage our users to share information and buddy-up on training and such but there are some situations where sharing is not appropriate.

PTWin32 is a hybrid software product in two ways. First is the issue of modifications. While Black Bear licenses PTWin32 for use as an off-the-shelf product it can also be made-to-order with custom modifications for specific jurisdictions. These two types of installations are incompatible when it comes to sharing certain files.

Second is the issue of changes you may have made to your installation. Remember you might have defined custom fields on Permit Info or Additional Info tabs, not to mention your Fees, Selection Values, Reports, Security, etc.

You may have a lot of work wrapped up in your PTWin32 settings that you would be hard pressed to lose. So even two off-the-shelf installations have to be careful with the sharing of files.

A favor from a friend that ruins your modifications or data doesn’t help you. So don’t let anyone install or upgrade anything on your installation without checking with us first. Black Bear’s Technical Support Dept. can usually tell you if what you are planning is okay.
