How much space?
Well that depends...

Drive space requirements for PTWin32, the BDE, and records

Tip #: 3.3.59
Ver(s):PTWin32

The vast majority of hard drives sold these days contain more than enough space to run PTWin32 for many years before outgrowing the available storage. However, there are some folks who play it close to the bone so for them we offer the following numbers for initial installations.

Reserve about 70 megabytes for a stand-alone installation of PTWin32 plus approximately 15 megabytes for the BDE if it’s not already installed.

A network server installation of PTWin32 should be allotted in the region of 45 megabytes while a network client requires nearly 30 megabytes plus approximately 15 megabytes for the BDE if it’s not already installed.

As for record size that can vary greatly depending on how your PTWin32 installation is configured and how much data you enter. We find the average record length for a permit record along with all of its attendant detail records like parcel, contractor, fees, etc. to be between 70 and 120 thousand bytes. So roughly speaking every 5000 permits you enter into PTWin32 will need between 350 and 600 megabytes of storage.

To put it another way, Let’s say you process about 1000 permits a year and have 20-gigabytes of storage. That means you’re good for about 286 years of PTWin32 use before you outgrow your current setup.
