Everything you run slows you down

Other programs that can slow down PTWin

Tip #: 3.3.60
Ver(s):PTWin32, V2, V1

If PTWin32 seems to run slowly for you the first place to look for things to optimize is in the inventory of programs simultaneously running on your computer while you are using PTWin32.

No matter how expensive your computer there is a point at which you can exceed its ability to process information. This finite pool of available resources is depleted each time you run a program. Add to that the fact that some running programs can interfere with the execution of other unrelated programs and you’re left with a lot of places where things can be slowed down.

For example, some anti-virus programs can be configured to check every file that is opened or closed for a virus. This is not much of a problem when you are opening or closing a single word processing document. But PTWin32 is a relational database program that opens and closes many files.

When you open the Permit window of PTWin32 you are actually opening and using over 150 files. If your anti-virus software is set to hold up processing while it sifts through each file then it’s no wonder that PTWin32’s performance appears to suffer.

This is not the only kind of interference possible. There are all kinds of screen savers, disk compressors, hardware drivers, and swap configurations that can affect processing speed. PTWin32 can only do its best with what it is given.

Besides programs you yourself may execute to run in tandem with PTWin32 like GIS or word processors, there are also a variety of programs that load and stay resident every time you start your computer.

The Windows task bar shows you some of what you have loaded in the system tray but you can also bring up a list by pressing [CTRL], [ALT], and [DEL] simultaneously. This displays your Windows task box and lists the programs that are running on your computer at any given moment.

The programs in this task box are the first place to start looking for things that might degrade the performance of PTWin32. Remember that the sheer number of programs can contribute as well. Find out what they all are and what they do. Unload the ones you don’t need and see if PTWin32’s performance increases.

This process of elimination usually uncovers the culprit but if nothing seems to work contact Black Bear Technical Support.

We can help you eliminate other possibilities like CMOS, autoexec.bat, and config.sys loaded programs as well as special hardware you may have installed that is eating up your resources.
