Explaining under-bar file names

Tutility Table Repair safety backup file names

Tip #: 3.3.61
Ver(s):PTWin32, V2, V1

PTWin32 uses over 70 database tables that contain nearly 1,100 fields. There are over 370 data files supporting the tables including over 220 index files. And we haven’t even begun to discuss executive program files or reports. Obviously PTWin32 is a complex system especially considering it’s designed to run on a network with many simultaneous users.

The laws of probability say that sooner or later something this complex is going to screw up even if it’s something as simple as a power failure. But this is true of any database system, not just PTWin32. It’s the nature of the beast and cannot be avoided. But fear not for most problems of this nature can be repaired. This is why we include the Tutility Table Repair Utility with PTWin32.

This table maintenance and backup program is accessed from the PTWin32 program group and allows you to rebuild and verify tables and index files, as well as remove slack space and make backup files.

When you rebuild a database table using Tutility the program makes a copy of the corrupt table before attempting to repair the damage. Tutility names this backup copy by replacing the character before the dot with an under-bar “_”. So a Tutility backup of the PARCEL.DB table will be called PARCE_.DB.

You may have seen these under-bar tables in your \PTWin32\Data directory and wondered what they were. These files can be deleted or left with no effect on the operation of PTWin32. But don’t run Tutility or delete any files before checking with your system administrator or a Black Bear Technician.
