Pushing the Post Button

By Many Measures
A number of vantage points
Cross-indexing between PTWin32's tabbed notebooks

Tip #: 4.4.104
Ver(s): PTWin32, V2

A lot of thought and input from local government has gone into PTWin products over the years. We believe we have developed a system that greatly minimizes an everyday user’s need to have knowledge of the underlying data model.

We have departed from the traditional to provide you with a number of cross-indexed pictures of your data. For example, The PTWin32 Parcel window has a tab that lists all of the owners for the selected parcel, while the Owners window has a tab that displays all parcels owned by the selected owner.

This type of cross-indexing gives you the ability to move quickly between related records. From the Owners tab of the parcel window you can press the Goto Owner button to open the Owners window to the owner record selected in the Parcel window.

Here you can go to the Parcels Owned tab of the Owners window and select another parcel owned by this owner. Pressing the Goto Parcel button here will return you to the Parcel window with the newly selected parcel record displayed.

Rather than having to write a query or hunt and peck for the relationships, you can use PTWin32’s cross-indexed tabs to hopscotch between related records.

There are plenty of opportunities to navigate using cross-indexed tabs. In the Parcel window alone, besides owners, you have tabs that show permit records attached to the selected parcel, and code enforcement actions taken against the parcel.

This leads you to more cross-indexing as the Code Enforcement window has cross-indexed tabs for Inspection, and Fee and Receipt records, as well as leading you back to the Parcel record.

The Permit window cross-indexes to seven other related database tables and the Contractors window has cross-indexed tabs for Permit and License records including the ability to compare required licenses with obtained licenses.

The cross-referencing mentioned in this article refers to PTWin32’s Management View.  PTWin32 comes with two other ways to see your data arranged. These are Front Desk View and Plan Review View.

These alternate view windows provide you with other ways of following cross-indexed trails through your data. So before you set off to write a new report that shows all parcels owned by a given owner, remember all you have to do is go to the Owners window and click on the Parcels Owned tab to get your cross-indexed answer.
