Avoiding the creation of fields that already exists

Tip #: 5.1.114
Ver(s):PTWin32, V2, V1

PTWin32 is the result of over a decade’s worth of refinements based on suggestions from the largest user community in the industry. The software contains nearly eleven hundred fields spread across over seventy interrelated database tables.

Chances are whatever you want to keep track of is covered in the standard field set. Additionally the fields on the main tab of most windows can have their prompts changed by using the Modifications command of the Options menu.

As you manage your PTWin32 installation and think about fields you might like to add to the user configurable Additional Information tabs, make sure the fields you add do not already exist in the standard PTWin32 system.

If you create a field on an Additional Info tab that already exists on another tab of the same window, chances are some of your users will fill in the field that exists in the standard system and some of them will use the redundant field you have created on the Additional Info tab. This is sure to mess up reports and make for general confusion in your workplace.

So check all the tabs before you add a field that might already be present. And try to use the prompt changing feature wherever possible. Every field you add increased the complexity faced by each user and makes the system bigger and slower.

If you’re not sure about the existence of a field give us a call and we can quickly tell you what’s available.
