Windows Uninstall will delete your data files

Tip #: 5.2.118
Ver(s):PTWin32, V2, V1

If you’re an average user then you have probably found out by now what it’s like to lose important computer files. That’s why we bug you so much about making backups.

It’s hard enough to keep from accidentally deleting important data without having to worry about programs that do it for you, but that’s just what goes on when you uninstall PTWin32 using the Windows’ Add/Remove Programs utility found on the Windows Control Panel.

When you install PTWin32 one of the things your Windows operating systems does is record the name and location of all the files copied to your hard drive. This includes the empty database tables found in the PTWin32\Data directory.

Once installed you use the database tables to store your PTWin32 information. The tables grow but their name and location does not change.

If you then use the Windows Add/Remove Programs utility to uninstall PTWin32 the utility will consult Windows’ record of files installed and use it to delete your live data as well as the PTWin32 program.

Always backup the contents of your PTWin32\Data directory before using Windows to uninstall PTWin32.
