PTWin User Tips / WORKING WITH BLACK BEAR SYSTEMS

Pushing the Post Button

A big, thick milk shake
With a narrow, little straw
Using FTP to transfer files to and from Black Bear Systems

Tip #: 5.4.138
Ver(s): PTWin32, V2, V1

Remember when sending us your data involved putting it on a zip disk or CD and waiting for the postman to schlep it out to us? Those days are gone for all but a few PTWin32 users.

Now all you need to do is use the PTWin32 backup utility to make a compressed file containing your data and email it to us for more immediate attention. But what happens if the email is too big to send?

There are lots of folks who can get in the way when it comes to sending an email with an attachment. Usually this involves a size limit placed upon email transmissions. The limit can come from your local computer guys, your ISP, or any other number of players in the loop.

If you find that you are not permitted to send us your data in an email there is another way. FTP or File Transfer Protocol is a procedure used on the Internet for sending and receiving files regardless of their size.

We can provide you with instructions for placing or retrieving your data from our FTP site, thus ending the need for you to attach the data to an email message. Give us a call at (360) 379-9750 and we will explain how easy it is to use FTP.

We maintain a large FTP site and can provide a secured location for your data should the need arise.

Of course it is possible that your local computer people have installed firewall software that prevents the use of FTP. If this is the case you will need to contact them to change your options.
