The ghost of systems past
Operating systems & their legacies
Removing all traces of a previous Windows installation

Tip #: 5.4.142
Ver(s):PTWin32, V2, V1

Microsoft Windows is a complex operating system. It gets in to your computer on one of the ground floors and controls virtually everything from there up.

Casual users of computers don’t normally need to know about the complexities of their configuration and this article is no exception. However if your goal is to change the operating system on a computer from one type of Windows to another you need to know how to remove all traces of the old version.

This does not involve countless hours of sleuthing work on your part but it does necessitate taking a shotgun approach that involves formatting the hard drive.

Let’s say you have a computer using Windows ME and you want to convert it to use Windows XP. Simply running the XP upgrade will not remove all trace of the original ME installation. This can then cause problems with some of your windows applications including PTWin32.

In order to do it right you will need to completely wipe the hard drive of the computer before running the XP installation. This is the only way to ensure that all remnants of ME have been removed.

Create a boot disk and use the Format Disk command to format the hard drive of the target computer. This will flush any and all data stored on the hard drive and return it to a completely blank and refreshed condition. Once this is done you can run the XP installation knowing that no trace of ME remains.
